Consolidated ASA web site coming soon!

As ASA moves forward with our communication and outreach efforts, we will be debuting a consolidated ASA web site soon.  This site takes all ASA web content, including content presently found on this ATSC site, and puts it all together in one location.  The ATSC web site will not be used after that point (except for the team-specific pages), and links to http://atsc-va.org/ will be re-directed to the ASA site.

The new version of the site features:

-          Consolidated ASA web content (for all programs – Rec, Teen, Travel, and more) in one location
-          Updated and expanded content
-          Improved “findability” of info via a revised navigation scheme

Note that this is not considered a site re-design.  We know that the existing design could be improved, and we are hoping to go down that path in the next year or two.  This is a first step towards improving ASA’s online presence, and it also represents a positive step towards making our families’ lives easier by presenting information in one place that is easier to work with.

The new version of the site will live at http://www.arlingtonsoccer.com (where the present ASA site is).  We’ll let you know as we approach the transition date, so keep your eyes peeled.
U11B Eagles Red Win PWSI Icebreaker
March 2011

In the U11B Red Division, Eagles Red continued their pre-season tournament success with four straight victories. In the opener, Eagles knocked off Vienna Mighty Reds 2-1. The second game on Saturday was a 7-0 victory over West-mont Heat of Pennsylvania. On Sunday morning, the boys faced off against NCSL Division 1 rivals OBGC Blades and pulled out a 1-0 win with a goal in the 44th minute.

On to the finals against PWSI Courage Red, a fellow Virginia U11 heavyweight that Eagles had never played before. Eagles got on the board early with two goals in the first ten minutes, but conceded a penalty kick just before the half. A quick goal in the second half put Eagles ahead 3-1. The defense held on well against a quick and strong PWSI attack, but in the 58th minute another penalty kick was conceded. Eagles Red then stood strong to avoid the tying goal and came away with a great 3-2 victory. In Eagles Red’s two pre-season tournaments, both in Premier Divisions, they outscored their opponents 27-4, with only two of the goals conceded coming in the run of play. Eagles Red are coached by Mo Tayari.

U12 Attack Red, U15 Suprema Inferno Finalists in Premier Cup
March 2011

U12B Attack Red was a finalist in the Predator Division over the weekend of March 12-13. After a shaky start in the first game, the team rallied to earn two consecutive shut-outs to advance to the finals. In the final, which was played under almost perfect conditions, the boys lost a hard-fought game, 1-0. This was Attack Red’s second tournament of the spring and also only the second tournament playing 11 v. 11. With each successive game, the team improved and is looking forward to continuing the momentum into the spring NCSL season. Attack Red is coached by Tony Damiani, Alexis Koppius, and Youssef Jride.

Congratulations to the U15B Arlington Suprema Inferno and their coach, Mo Tayari, for reaching the finals in the Adidas Predator Division! Coming straight off their win in the ASIST, Coach Tayari’s boys had another strong effort. The Inferno continued their recent winning form by defeating all opponents in their bracket and conceding only a single goal. The Inferno dropped the very closely contested final, 1-0. Throughout the tournament the boys had a great learning experience, playing several unfamiliar teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Fredericksburg, Virginia. The team’s strong showing in the pre-season tournaments is encouraging as the team moves on to the challenges of NCSL Division 1.

U10G Comets Blue Liberty Cup Finalists
March 2011

The Arlington U10G Comets Blue team finished as finalists in the Gold Division, played over the weekend of March 26-27, 2011 at Lee District Park in Fairfax. The Comets allowed only one goal in their three preliminary games, defeating SYC Lions Black 5-0, following up Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over LMVSC Patriots White, and blanking the ODFC Predators 2-0 on Sunday morning.

The Comets entered the championship game at the top of the rankings and was pitted against a tough Annandale team ABGC Extreme White. ABGC Extreme scored early on a penalty kick, and then followed up with another goal. The Comets rallied with a goal early in the second half but, despite many shots on goal, could not find the equalizer and lost, 2-1. The Comets are coached by Erik Footland, Natalie Gurson and Lyle Adams.

U17G ARL Intensity Red (AIR) Reach Cherry Blossom Finals
March 2011

U17G Arlington Intensity Red (AIR) were Finalists in the High School Division of the MSI Cherry Blossom Tournament. They played strongly in the first three games, not allowing a goal, and finishing their shots to win 2-0 against the STN Netrippers, 2-0 against the OBGC Spartans, and 2-0 against the Damascus Freedom in the semi-finals. They continued competitive play in the final against the STN Rowdies. Their defense remained solid. In the very last minutes of the match, an opponent went down in AIR's box, and following a tough ref call and a penalty kick, AIR was defeated, 1-0. Intensity Red is coached by John McAuley, Jack McAuley, and Walid Amer.

U9 Rangers Blue, Samba Black Icebreaker Finalists
March 2011

In the Silver Division, U9B Rangers Blue reached the finals. The Rangers won each of their group stage games by a score of 5-0. Then a great team effort, including some creative play and incisive passing, enabled the Rangers to win the semi-final game 5-1. This meant the championship match pitted our local boys against Potomac Soccer Club. In a close contest, the Rangers seemed to have more of the possession and create more chances but Potomac’s defense answered the challenge each time. The Rangers took the lead, but Potomac leveled the score 10 minutes later. The championship match remained knotted after regulation and two overtime periods, and was doomed to be decided by dreaded penalty kicks. Alas, the Potomac squad proved quite good at spot kicks and the Rangers settled for runner-up medals. It has been widely reported that the shinny medallions effectively washed away the boys’ disappointment on the ride back to Arlington. Rangers Blue are coached by Frank DeMarco, Jesse Phillips, Jim Hannesschlager, and Bryant Meckley.

U9G Samba Black participated in their first tournament, the PWSI Icebreaker (Gold Division) in Springfield, Va. over the very cold (snow anyone?) March 26-27th weekend. They were Finalists, and very proud of their first tournament showing. The girls had the support of their four amazing coaches: Jawed Sanie, Mike Woods, Emily Trout, and Kim Cratsenberg.

U09B Rangers Black Win Sportsmanship Awards
March 2011

The U09 Rangers Black won the Randy Rawls Sportsmanship Awards during the ODSL Fall 2010 season. Each season the coaches in the ODSL vote for a team in their division which exhibits the best sportsmanship. In addition, sportsmanship points are averaged from each referee report card, and points are subtracted for yellow and red cards accumulated during the season. ODLS believes kids learn best by following an example. A pattern of disrespect and abuse on the part of an adult can have a profound effect on young minds. Even an unguarded moment can have a lasting effect. Soccer is perhaps the best sport in existence to teach players how to make their own decisions. In addition to molding kids into disciplined and skillful soccer players, we also have the responsibility of training tomorrow’s adults to make reasoned decisions about things that will effect their character, their respect for others, and their respect for themselves forever. We are all proud of the excellent example one of our youngest teams have set for all Arlington soccer. Great job Rangers!

Eagles Red are coached by Mo Tayari, with assistance from Alexis Koppius, Bryant Meckley, and Yousseff Jride.

In the U13 Boys Premier division, Arlington Impact Red conceded zero goals in preliminary action, beating Vienna Heat Blue (1-0), Montgomery County Falcons (2-0), and the Longueuil (Quebec) Patriotes (1-0). Impact Red are coached by Grant Smith, with assistance from Roger Goodbold.

The team conceded zero goals in defeating Mclean Titans Green (2-0), GNA (Ohio) Revolution Blue (1-0), Old Dominion Azzuri (1-0), and Alexandria Dynamo Elite in the final, 3-0.

U10B United Red a Finalist in Bethesda Tournament
November 2010

The United Red opened their tournament against the Stoddert Blue Metros and won their first game 1-0. It is notable that the last time these two teams met a year ago, the United Red lost 6-3. This game showed how hard the boys have worked on their passing, shooting, footwork and defensive techniques.

The momentum from this first win carried the United Red through to their next game, a fiercely competitive match against the defending champions Laurel SC FCR Lions White that ended in a 1-1 draw. The United Red won 3-1 over the Montgomery MSC Academy White propelling them into the championship finals.

9th Annual Coaches Game
October 2010

ASA’s 9th Annual Coaches game was played on Saturday night at Quincy Park. The game featured the coaching staff from the travel side of the ASA from both the girls and the boys teams. This event has become a tradition for the club and it seems to grow in popularity every year. The travel teams also use the event to help raise money for their legacy accounts for additional team events over the course of a year.

The game was another exciting match with some high level soccer on display. The coaches were the recipient of familiar feedback they offer to the players in the club during training sessions and games. It seems that the kids really enjoy having the opportunity to turn the tables on their coaches. The event also allows for the newer staff to get to know some of the coaches we have had in the club for years. The fun environment is a perfect way to enjoy each other and support the players and teams in the club.

The game score went back and forth all night with both teams having leads during the match. The final result was a 4-4 draw, the first draw in several years. The Blue team relied on Roger Goodbold (2), Tom Wasley (1) and Frank DeMarco (1) for its goals. The White got it’s scoring from Chris Smith (1), Matt Miller (1), Lyle Adams (1) and Wes Windsor. Both goal keepers made terrific saves throughout the match to preserve the draw.

The game was officiated by Richard Easby, Travel Committee President, in the center and the AR’s of Bob Waffle (ASA Board) and Jo Easby. A special thanks should go out to them for doing such a great job AND putting up with some coaches nonsense.

Thanks also to Melissa Hunt as the Travel Committee player representative for all of her hard work in the organization of the event. Also, a special thnkas to Isabel Arnold for her help with the team photo and the raffle at halftime.

The Virginian Tournament Results
May 29-31, 2010

U10B Eagles White — Champions of Silver Division

For the second year in a row, the U10 Boys Eagles White took home the Silver Division championship trophy at the Virginian Tournament. Eagles White went through the tournament unbeaten, with wins over the Wyckoff Torpedoes, NVSC Jr. Royals, BAC Hawks, and concluding with an exciting, come from behind 3-2 overtime win against Gunston Premier Red. The team is coached by Mo Tayari, Chris Holden and Alexis Koppius.

U10B Eagles Red — Champions of Gold Division

After victories in the ASIST and SASA tournaments in March, U10 Boys Eagles Red won their third straight Premier Division tournament. The Eagles posted a 2-1-0 record in the preliminary games with only a 2-1 loss to CYA Arsenal marring their record. They subsequently defeated the top seed from the other bracket, ASA Lightning, 4-2, to advance to the Monday morning final. The switch from a bumpy, sloped grass field to artificial turf suited Eagles Red’s ball control skills perfectly and they rolled to a 5-0 victory in the final in a rematch against CYA Arsenal. For the 2009-2010 year. The Eagles Red is coached by Mo Tayari, Chris Holden and Alexis Koppius.

U10B Eagles Black — Finalists in Bronze Division

After winning their Division’s championship at the PWSI tournament, the U10 Boys Eagles Black were Finalists in the Bronze Division at the Virginian Tournament. Eagles Black went 3-0-0 in the preliminary matches. In the semifinal match, Eagles Black battled their brothers from the Eagles Blue team into overtime and came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. In the Finals, against a very good St. Mary’s team, the two teams traded goals through most of the game until the very end, with St. Mary’s pulling out a 4-2 victory. The team is coached by Grant Smith.

U13G Dynamo — Champions in Bronze Division

For the first time in Dynamo competitive history, Dynamo walked away with the championship trophy in this year’s Virginian. Playing in the U13G Bronze division, the Dynamo proved that hard work and determination pays off in great rewards. In the first game, Dynamo prevailed 3-2 against an SYC club that has proved to be both a familiar and competitive foe. Dynamo had a 1-1-1 record against the Thunder in the fall, and lost in the finals at the October Battlefield Classic to this same squad. The second game was another tight one-goal victory, where Dynamo defeated ODSL rival FPYC by a score of 1-0. Over the course of the next two games, Dynamo gave an indication of their capabilities on both sides of the pitch. A 4-0 victory over Mclean highlighted Dynamo’s scoring proficiency and a 0-0 tie with Sterling was a hard-fought defensive battle. All of which set the stage for an exciting championship game against New York based Clarkstown.

After fighting to a 1-1 tie at half time, both teams played their hearts out though the second half and two overtime periods without a change in score, forcing the championship to be decided by PKs. At the end of a long, grueling, hot day—Dynamo prevailed by knocking home four of five PK’s, while the stalwart Dynamo goalkeeper rejected two powerful attempts by the Clarkstown girls. With the PK score ending 4-3 in Dynamo’s favor, the championship game was registered in the books as a 2-1 Dynamo championship game victory. Over the three-day, five-game tournament—the Dynamo were undefeated, with three shutouts, nine goals for and four goals against.

Congratulations to all the Dynamo on their first tournament victory ever. The 2009-2010 Dynamo are: Addison, Addie, Amelia, Anna, Donia, Elie, Emily, Eva, Jennifer, Kate, Kaleigh (The General), Katie, Libby, Lilly, Nicole, Olivia, and Reed. The Dynamo are ably coached by Papa Dia and Emily Trout.

U14G Blast — Champions of Bronze-West Division

The U14 Girls Blast, coached by Wes Windsor and Ingrid Zegada-Frias, was victorious in the Bronze Division - West, winning all five of their games this past weekend at the Virginian. Coming from behind in two games to win a berth in the finals, Blast played tight defense while working the wings and utilizing superior foot skills to play to a 1-1 tie in the final against a very physical New Jersey team. After going scoreless in two 10 minute overtimes, the players put the match away in penalty kicks. Christine Vincent, Sam Tigner, Anne Terpstra , Jordan Rivera, Madeline Preiss, Elizabeth Morley, Meghan McDonald, Zoey Lande, Lauren Karpinski, Alex Ellison, Joanna Easby, Julia Campbell, Emily Bragaw-Butler, Nina Beatrice, and Sarah Bauman worked seamlessly as a team in stringing together their winning weekend. Of his players, Windsor noted "They displayed a tremendous individual and team spirit this whole weekend. They never backed down and battled for each other from the first whistle to the last."
