ATSC Submits Recommendations for New Synthetic Turf Field
Sports Commission Goal to Submit Recommendation by August
On June 26, approximately 100 community representatives attended the Arlington Sports Commission's general interest meeting to learn more about the benefits of synthetic grass fields and the candidate fields for conversion. The County has funds to convert one field over the winter, to make available in Spring, 2004. Representatives from ATSC, ASA and the Bolivian soccer league provided comments on priorities for field selection.
The next step is for interested parties to submit written comments on their views of where the next synthetic turf field should be installed. ATSC submitted comments highlighting our priorities, which are, first, a full-sized field, measured by both length and width, and second, a field that will maximize the use of recreational (meaning lighted, non-high school) play.
Of the top candidate fields presented by the Sports Commission, ATSC's first choice is a slightly widened TJ Upper field. Currently the field measures 60x120, and expanding the width 10 yards would create a field for optimum play by high school and adult aged teams. We suggested that TJ Lower would also be a good candidate if the field size issues could be addressed.
The Sports Commission will discuss any comments received at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, July 24 at Courthouse Plaza, at 7:00 pm. They hope to begin installation of a new field by mid November.
