Generals Double Their Pleasure Two Wins over the Weekend Keep Them Undefeated in League Play
(May 8, 2006)
The Generals began their march towards promotion in earnest this weekend with back to back wins in league play.
On Saturday, the team traveled 65 miles to St. Mary’s Maryland, and the trip was definitely worth it. In perhaps one of their best showings of year the Generals produced a resounding 4-0 win over the SMU Storm. The win kept the Generals unbeaten and in the hunt for promotion and the division title.
After defending for the opening 10 minutes of the match, the Generals took the lead on a counter attack against the run of play. From that moment on the Generals’ passing game began to make its mark on the match. They doubled their lead halfway through the opening period, and two early strikes after the break ended any doubt about the outcome. The only drama that remained was whether the Generals could preserve the shutout, and in the end even that was rarely put to question.
On Sunday the Generals had to work much harder for the victory over a game Free State Eagles squad, but in the end the result was much the same, with the Generals on top 3-1. The Generals’ steady first half attack led to a 1-0 advantage, but a staunch Eagle defense, a difficult pitch, and perhaps some fatigue from their second match of the weekend kept them from extending the margin.
After the break the Generals seemed to grow complacent, and the Eagles found the equalizer. With the match apparently headed for a draw, the Generals dug down deeper. A late flurry of pressure led first to the game winner, and then to the goal that sealed the outcome.
The back to back victories ran the Generals league unbeaten streak to five this season and eleven dating from last fall. With three games remaining on the schedule, the Generals control their destiny. They stand undefeated with four wins and a draw. Promotion is well within their grasp, and a showdown for the division title on the last day of the season is growing more likely.
