(November, 2006)
The Generals compiled a league record of 6 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss in the fall 2005 NCSL season. Their 20 points were good enough to place them second in their division and earn them promotion to Division 4 for the spring 2006 season. For the season they scored 20 goals while yielding 10.
The Generals, with a new coach and coming off a preseason tournament championship, began the season with a well earned 1-1 draw against the talented and physical Braddock Road Blackhawks. The Blackhawks will once again be on the Generals' schedule for the spring 2006 season, based on their third place finish in the division, which guarantees them promotion to Division 4 as well.
The Generals followed up their opening game draw with a convincing 2-0 win over the Vienna Vipers. The Generals controlled the flow of the play, but a staunch defense kept the Vipers in the game. A late goal proved decisive, giving the Generals some well earned breathing room.
In their next game, the Generals suffered their only setback of the fall campaign. The Gunston Gunners came to Arlington ready to play, and the score was 2-0 in their favor before the Generals settled in. The Generals played better from that point on, tallying a goal of their own, but two more strikes by the Gunners provided the final margin of victory for the Gunners. Like the Blackhawks, the Gunners – the eventual division winners – will be on the Generals’ schedule for the spring 2006 season.
The Generals continued to stumble in their next outing. Playing on a difficult pitch, they struggled to a 2-2 draw with the WSC Lancers. Despite many chances, including two late near misses, the Generals were unable to find the game winner and overcome the two goals they conceded. Whether this game provided the needed wake up call, or something else inspired the Generals, from this point forward they proved unbeatable.
Their run began with a workmanlike, if not inspiring, 2-0 win over the Annandale United FC. They continued to build momentum in their next contest with a hard fought 2-1 triumph over a determined Sterling Strike Force squad.
With a two game win streak on the line, the Generals hit their stride with an inspiring 3-1 win over a quality opponent, the CSA Blitz. The Generals may see the Blitz again in the spring: their fourth place finish may earn them a promotion to Division 4 along with the Gunners, the Generals, and the Blackhawks. If so, the Generals better be ready for another tough contest.
With two games remaining in the season, and promotion not assured, the Generals continued to take care of business. On another difficult pitch, the Generals defeated the McLean Fire 3-1. Then, in their final league game, with promotion on the line, the Generals produced perhaps their best display of the season. Minus one of their midfield stalwarts due to illness, the Generals dismantled a quality side, defeating the Waldorf MD United 4-0. The Generals’ near flawless performance likely cost the United a promotion, which is fortunate for the Generals, because the next time they meet the United will likely be looking to even the score.
The Generals final tally of 20 points placed them second in the division and earned them a spot on division 4 for the spring 2006 season. They will be looking to build on their fall 2005 success as they attempt to climb the NCSL ladder in the coming seasons.
