Fall 2007

WAGS GAME #1:  Arlington Express 1, McLean Force 0
In a hard fought game, Carol Balshaw’s free kick found Clare Terpstra’s head in the final 10 minutes of the game to give the Express the victory.  The defense led by Alika Johnston, Vasthy Delgado, Karen Sible, and Carrie Dawkins did not give the Force many opportunities on goal.  The midfield and forwards, which included Linsdey Treweek, Katja Butts, Claire Bruno, Molly McGovern, Alejandra Espinoza, Molly Ramey, Mandy Munsch, Courtney Taylor, Courtney Herbolsheimer, Hayes O’Connor, and Shanley Costa kept possesion of the ball well throughout the game.

WAGS GAME #2:  Arlington Express 2, Stafford Liberty 0
Playing against a very good team, the Express benefited from a nice finish from Shanley Costa and Courtney Herbolsheimer’s bomb from the top of the box sealed the win for the Express.  The defense led by Alika Johnston, Vasthy Delgado, Clare Terpstra, Carrie Dawkins, and Karen Sible recorded their second shutout in a row and special performances were turned in by our entire midfield and forwards led by Carol Balshaw, Linsdsey Treweek, Katja Butts, Molly McGovern, Claire Bruno, Molly Ramey, Mandy Munsch, Courtney Taylor, Hayes O’Connor, and Alejandra Espinoza.

WAGS GAME #3:  Arlington Express 3, Ashburn Wildfire 0
After a sluggish first half, the Express scored three second half goals to put out the Wildfire.  Alejandra Espinoza’s two pretty finishes were followed by Shanley Costa’s own nice finish to seal the deal for the Express.  The defense recorded their third shutout in a row to keep the Express on top in WAGS D5.

WAGS GAME #4:  Arlington Express 1, SYA Magic 1
After yet another sluggish start, the Magic made the Express pay by scoring a goal 7 minutes into the contest.  The Express then came to life and played with more urgency and Courtney Taylor was able to equal the score before halftime. The Express continued to dominate the rest of the game and actually did a very nice job of keeping possession of the ball, but the finishing was not good enough to win the game.  The team has three weeks off before their next game against Fredericksburg Impact.

WAGS GAME #5:  Arlington Express 1, Fredericksburg Impact 0
The Express and Impact entered the game with first place in D5 on the line, and the game’s intensity showed just that.  The game was very evenly played throughout the contest, but the Express’s stingy defense continued to frustrate the Impact throughout the game.  The Impact had a player sent off in the final fifteen minutes of the game and the Express took advantage of being a man up.  Katja Butts scored one of the biggest (and prettiest) goals in team history off of a corner kick from Carol Balshaw to send the Express into celebration.  The defense led by Clare Terpstra, Alika Johnston, Vasthy Delgado, Carrie Dawkins, and Karen Sible recorded their 4th shutout in 5 games and all of the midfielders played well throughout the contest.

WAGS GAME #6:  Arlington Express 2, Olney Wolfpack 0
The Express struggled offensively all the way across the board to start this game off.  The backs had trouble keeping possession of the ball, the midfielders were not supporting early enough, and the forwards were not creating problems for the opposing sweeper or goalkeeper.  To the players credit, they kept an even keel at halftime as the coaches asked them to make corrections that they thought would help the team win the game.  Alejandra Espinoza and Vasthy Delgado were able to score goals after Clare Terpstra was able to help jumpstart the attack in the second half.  Lindsey Treweek and Karen Sible both made excellent plays to set-up Espinoza’s goal and Delgado was able to finish a penalty kick after Terpstra was fouled in the box.

WAGS Game #7: Arlington Express 3, Vienna Comets 0

After a shaky performance the week before, the Express came out playing very well in all aspects of the game.  The defense recorded yet another shutout, continuing what has been a most impressive 2007.  Offensively, the team had several opportunities throughout the game and Courtney Taylor, Courtney Herbolsheimer, and Clare Terpstra were all able to find the net.  The Express have a chance to win the WAGS Divison 5 championship next week with a win or a tie against the very tough Fredericksburg Impact.

WAGS Game #8:  Arlington Express 0, Fredericksburg Impact 0

With a chance to win the division title at home, the Express came through yet again with great team defense all over the field.  In a very evenly played match, the team limited the Impact to few scoring opportunities which was pretty much the story of the game.  All of the players on the Express deserve a huge congratulations for becoming WAGS Division 5 champions in their first season!

WAGS Game #9:  Arlington Express 3, Stafford Liberty 1

Scary decision-making by the coaches put the fans on edge in this game.  Courtney Taylor started the game in goal and Alika Johnston displayed her offensive talents up at forward. Great goals were scored by Vasthy Delgado, Clare Terpstra, and Alejandra Espinoza.  All of the players deserve a lot of praise for the committment they have put forward for their team.  The players for the Express in 2007 also included:  Claire Bruno, Carrie Dawkins, Karen Sible, Molly Ramey, Katja Butts, Linsdey Treweek, Molly McGovern, Courtney Herbolsheimer, Shanley Costa, Mandy Munsch, Hayes O'Connor, and Carol Balshaw.
